7 Soothing Bible Verses You Need to Know
Some times life is overwhelming, and we all need a little soothing.
It reminds me of when we had babies, and the experts would talk about how babies have to learn how to self-soothe.
As life goes on, it feels like I keep leveling up on the stress game. Okay, you know how to handle a baby now? Try a toddler. Okay, you survived the toddlers, here are some new and different challenges, uniquely made, just for you.
Life can be an epic obstacle course.
I mean think about it. If it isn’t a challenge, it is just a boring boat ride to nowhere. So having a life full of obstacles to overcome is okay.
And in the middle of all that overcoming, sometimes there are wounds that need to be soothed and healed and feelings that must be dealt with.
We all have to find a way to mentally manage all of these anxiety inducing obstacles.
The Bible is a valuable place to conduct a little self soothing of your own.
In fact, it is deeper than that. When you dig in to the Scriptures, you are not just soothing yourself. The Holy Spirit is also there to teach and comfort you too. There is power in the Word of God.
This year, I was beginning to read the book of Jeremiah, and feeling especially spiritually needy. I knew that Jeremiah was not what 2022 called for. Of course, all scriptures are profitable, but I wanted a more calming, inspirational tone for where I was in my journey.
The words of Jesus himself were what I needed to read this year. So I changed my course and moved over to Matthew.
When you know you are not where you need to be spiritually, I think the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are the place to be.
Plus, I like to share what I read with my kids each day, whoever is around that morning, and I felt like they could use some good ol’ letters in red too. (They used to always write the words of Jesus in red. I don’t see that as much these days.)
So without further ado, here are a few soothing Bible verses I have found especially helpful this year.
#1. Believe.
“And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.”
Matthew 13:57-58
Wow. So many thoughts from that. Jesus dealt with people not supporting him, people he knew and loved.
Also, what a powerful reminder to BELIEVE. What if we miss out on miracles and mighty works because of our own unbelief?
#2. The Compassion of God:
“When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”
Matthew 14: 14
Many times it talks about the love and compassion that Jesus has for people, and that is so reassuring. He cares. I love how he cares.
#3. The Church:
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Matthew 16:18
I love these words that Jesus says to Peter. It validates the church. I also see it as a reminder that no matter what the world throws at the church, Jesus said that the gates of hell shall not prevail against us.
Sometimes it feels like all the people are messing it all up.
God knew he was leaving his church in the hands of sinful man. That was the whole point of Jesus dying on the cross in the first place. Even when things look bleak, he is there, and he still cares about the church and the people in it.
#4. The Greatest Commandment
And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:36-40
Ok, that is more like four verses, but it is a real favorite of mine. Love God. Love people. The rest should happen naturally as a consequence of loving God and people. Such wisdom! So reassuring!
God is not about, “Here’s the tightrope, toe it or die. Do not even look like you cannot toe the tightrope.” People sometimes make you feel like that is Christianity, but it isn’t. Pay more attention to what the Bible actually says than all the paranoid people among us who just want to impress each other with how good they can be.
It’s about loving God and each other. That is what life is about, and when I read that I feel like, “Phew! Surely I can do that!”
Ha! And then no, I still struggle to do just those little things. I am so dependent on grace.
#5. Always with us:
“And behold I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:20
These were some of the last words of Jesus, and I feel like you cannot get any more reassuring that that. He is with us even to the end of the age.
Some English versions say “age”, some say “world.” Age sounds more poetic, but either way, he “ain’t” leaving us. That is the point.
#6. Nothing is impossible.
“For nothing will be impossible with God.”
Luke 1:37
This was said by the angel Gabriel to Mary when he told her about her barren cousin Elizabeth being pregnant with a son.
It sort of lives in my brain as a motto. “Nothing will be impossible with God.” Now that is a happy motto.
#7. No need to be Anxious and troubled about many things.
I wrote about this last one one the list in more length here. It was a big deal to me this month because I was admittedly anxious and troubled about ALL the things. Oh man, I was not okay. Then I came across this in my reading, and it was like, “Ohhhhhh yeah, oh yeah. Oh no. I’m Martha now.”
“And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.
But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”
But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42
Ever since I read that passage, it has been easier to be motivated to sit at the feet of Jesus with my Bible and my morning cup of coffee. I needed that reminder that this was the good portion. The anxiety and being troubled was doing nothing for me at all, except causing me more trouble.
Okay, it feels impossible to only choose seven, but no one will read a list of 50!
I will probably make more lists like this, so share your favorite soothing verses that I should add for the next list in the comments! Many of you probably know a ton of them.
Anxiety is king during this move, and I need all the soothing words of God I can get.
I really love it. April. I need it too (all the soothing words of God). So, thank you for sharing.
