So you wanna get your act together.

so you wanna get your act together

First, I just want to say that I created this website because I googled “How to get your act together” at a low point, and I could not find anything good.

Maybe you came here at a low point. Self-esteem and your sense of purpose and direction have taken a hit, and maybe you find yourself desperate for some sort of revolution.

Or maybe you are just in a rut. (I personally have been on the edge of rut life since March 13th, 2020.)

Maybe someone or something has just crushed you completely.

Me? Really I guess I had pretty much crushed myself. Plus I had a fever and was stuck in bed feeling useless. That is when I came looking for this website. Only it did not exist, so I bought it. Ha! Score one for me. I have been looking for a new website to start for a while.

And you know what? We really are going to get our acts together!

All anyone needs for self-improvement is the desire to do so and some faith.

Our ducks will be in rows, and our ships will be in shape. Ship shape.

Sort of.

The annoying thing about all the websites I went to labeled anything to do with “getting your act together,” were so eye roll inducing. Like gag. Give me a break.

Don’t tell me to make a list, and everything will be okay. What if it’s not? Sometimes things are NOT OKAY. (Look, also, I can be very dramatic.)

getting my act together

I was not looking for a bunch of magazine friendly self-help advice columns, churned out by writer mills. Bleh.

What I was looking for was a real person trying to be better. I wanted to hear from someone willing to be open and honest and self-critical like me. So I saw that need and decided to fill it.

I know I cannot be the only giant self-critic out there! If you live life constantly scolding yourself for not doing better, but deep down you know that it would be healthier to be more positive, well, welcome. We are the same. Well, I mean, on this matter anyway… You know deep down we are all probably more alike than different.

My friend Courtney once said to me:

“You know I used to say that one day we’re going to get our act together. But then I realized. This is it. Right here. THIS is our act.”

~Courtney Nugent

She said that to me years ago, and still it has stuck with me. You really gotta own your mess. Be content with where you are.

I found that super refreshing. Lately I had forgotten that keen perspective on life. I have not been comfortable with my act, even less so than normal.

Did you see the movie Sing? It is a cartoon movie with a lady pig who sings (voiced by Reese Witherspoon). She is a mom pig who has like thirty piglets and is participating in a town singing competition. She explains to her dance partner that she simply cannot dance freely as he requests because “the fire went out a long time ago.”

Do you ever feel that way? I do. Cartoon movies have the best quotes, I tell ya.

Let’s get our fire back!!

I get overwhelmed with BIG goals. So let us make one small goal today.

Here is mine–take one step towards doing something new.

You see, I just bought this website and wrote this article. Technically, that ended up being like three separate tasks, but as I write this it has been two days already.

We can do this, guys. Get your fire back. Take one step. One tiny step, even if it’s just a walk to the end of your street or cooking dinner or calling someone back. Do something good.

We all have different areas that we feel like we need help with.

On this website, I focus on spiritual, mental, and emotional well being. Occasionally, I will write about physical wellness too, but it is not really my thing.

I tend to focus on the areas of organization, motivation, and productivity too because those are things I struggle with myself. But when I feel organized and have a clear plan, I feel WAY MORE motivated and get so much done.

When I research the things I need help with, I share what I learn on my website, in hopes that y’all can benefit without having to do as much research.

In summary, I encourage you to plan out one goal today and take one step towards that goal.
