If You Have a Loved One on Hospice Care, You Need to Read The In-Between.
This book, The In-Between: Unforgettable Encounters During Life’s Final Moments, by Hadley Vlahos, R.N., is a breath of fresh air. If you have a loved one approaching the end of their life or on hospice care, you will learn a ton about hospice and what to expect while chartering the unknown waters of terminal illness.
Talking about death and approaching death can feel like a taboo subject. We don’t talk about it a lot. This book addresses death, and yet somehow, this is NOT a depressing book. I found it to be a very informative, reassuring thing to read. I bought the book for both my mom and my mother-in-law, and they both finished it in a day! And it is a long book. It took me a week to listen to it on Audible.

Whether you buy The In-Between or not, or whether you are caring for a loved one or not, at least follow Hadley on Instagram.
You can also find her on Facebook if you do not have the gram. I think her original account is Tiktok, but I do not have that app.
Hadley’s Instagram account is how I discovered The In-Between in the first place. She does these skits about things she sees as a hospice nurse. One of the most fascinating themes of her book and her videos is the encounters dying people have with their deceased loved ones near the time that they pass away. For example, it is common for a dying man to say that his sister, who died years ago, is here, and she says they are going somewhere.
The stories of people seeing their deceased loved ones fascinated me and got me to buy The In-Between.
But what I loved more was how much I learned about the process of hospice and caring for a dying loved one. There was so much I did not know.
And I just want to reiterate, that this is NOT a depressing book. It is full of relatable stories. I laughed, I cried, and I would do it all over again.
I know this is a short review. If I weren’t writing this from a rainy, screened in back porch on my second week of vacation, I might could tell you more.
More things you will learn about in this book:
-tips for caring for Alzheimer’s patients
-what to expect if you or a family member goes on hospice
-comfort about the dying process
-perspective on dying
-the difference between hospital care and hospice
-so many heart warming stories
The best thing about this book is that it is not told in a boring nonfiction format of bare facts.
This book is a series of stories from Hadley’s life and her patients’ lives. It is chock full of heart warming stories. You will not be able to put it down because you will want to know what happens next.
I highly recommend this one!!!
I love, love, LOVE Nurse Hadley! I watch her videos all the time! She is the gentlest, sweetest soul on the planet! I’ve already lost both of my parents 12 and 13 yrs ago, but can still remember those last weeks, days and moments with them and after their passing because I relive them every time I hear someone else is going through those steps. If I’m close to them, I try to send them some encouragement usually through social media. My parents’ passings were actually expected after their short battles with illnesses but they were young, only 60 and 61, and I had young ones, 3 under 8 yrs old, at the time. It was tough and I couldn’t take care of my parents in my home but we had some decent places that made it all bearable. Hospice nurses are the best! I highly recommend the book, although I haven’t read it because I’ve seen her promote it and it sounds wonderful! I forgot to order a copy. Enjoy!
Oh you watch Hadley too!! Aren’t her videos so good? When I first saw them, they would give me chills!
I’m sorry to hear about your parents. That is a tough thing to go through.
