Day 7 of the Decluttering Challenge: Clean Out One Storage Bin for 15 Minutes

This is my unfinished, basement storage room before I decluttered it.

Welcome back to the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge! We made it to week two!!

For day seven we are heading straight into a storage container to get the most bang out of our time.

I was talking to someone about day seven, and she said she does not really use storage bins. Instead she uses shoe boxes. That just goes to show that she’s doing better than me. My stuff would never fit in a shoe box. Ha! I have these gigantic Rubbermaid and Sterlite bins.

I know most people don’t get excited about decluttering your storage bins, so I’m sorry for dragging us all through the weeds of our house. But I strongly feel that it is the best place to start. You can usually find so much to get rid of in your storage areas.

If you used it regularly, it would never end up in storage, right?

Good news! This is the last day of the challenge where you have to deal with your storage area.

Of course, if you can make it through more than one bin in fifteen minutes, go for it!

Storage Bin Inspiration & Tips:

-Hey, it’s in the storage room, so if you have not used it in the past year, you probably don’t need it.

-Never throw out anything you absolutely love and cannot easily replace. You will never catch me tossing photos or family videos.

-Never store photos in a shoebox or a photo frame. This I learned the hard way. With the least bit of moisture, they stick together and ruin each other. Some of the broken frames I threw out had photos self-glued to the glass from time.

-When you have multiple boys or multiple girls, keeping the hand-me-down clothes is definitely worth it. This has saved me so much money.

-If you have four boys, almost none of the hand-me-down clothes will ever make it to the fourth child.

-Label every single thing you put in a box or you may never see those things again.

-Everything looks neater and tidier in a box or a basket, rather than in an avalanche pile.

This was not all done in a day. That was my last house, and it took many sessions to get this storage room organized.

Plan for Week Two of the Challenge:

This week I will be publishing days seven through eleven, instead of twelve. On Thanksgiving day, I figure everyone will take the day off anyway, so we will skip Thursday this week.

I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving! I will still have new challenge videos up on Tuesday, Wednesday, and even Black Friday. I’m hoping to get some shopping done that day too.
